Immigrating abroad: 5 things to do as soon as I arrive

This is it! I'm moving abroad. As soon as I arrive in my new country, there are a few things I need to do to get my life off to a good start. And I need to get used to the idea that what's valid or usual in Morocco isn't necessarily the same in my new country.

Here are the first 5 administrative steps to take as soon as you arrive:

The first 5 steps:

  • Immigration formalities

At the airport, clearing customs and border police will validate your entry into the host country. Then I need to contact the immigration authorities to obtain a residence permit and, if necessary, a work permit. Each country has its own procedure for this. Before leaving the immigration office, it's essential that you check the accuracy of the information on the document issued by the officer. If you have the slightest doubt, or if you find an error, you must immediately report it to the agent so that he or she can make the correction.

  •  Social security insurance

You need to register for social security immediately. The social security number will enable you to identify yourself to the tax authorities and join a pension scheme. Bear in mind, however, that there may be a waiting period of a few months before you can benefit from social/health coverage. During this period, you are strongly advised to take out private insurance.

  • The bank

Opening a bank account is essential to start your life as an immigrant. That's why you should open a bank account as soon as you arrive, so you can access your funds and carry out your day-to-day banking transactions. Don't hesitate to find out about your host country's banking system beforehand, to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

  • Consular registration

The next step is also essential for a good start in the host country. Register with the Moroccan Consulate, which will give you a consular card with your personal number. Please note that only registered persons can benefit from consular services, such as the issuing of national identity cards and passports, legalization of documents, etc. You can find out what documents you'll need here.
